Big Brothers Big Sisters Celebrating National Mentoring Month with “Thank Your Mentor” Campaign, Roller Skate For Kids’ Sake Event

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 3, 2025) — January is National Mentoring Month, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana (BBBSKY) is marking the occasion in two big ways: a monthlong “Thank Your Mentor” awareness campaign and a brand new Rollerskate For Kids’ Sake event at Champs Rollerdrome on Saturday, January 18.

As the premiere youth mentoring organization in Kentucky and Southern Indiana, BBBSKY recognizes the lifelong positive impact that having a mentor creates. Mentorship is a powerful and beneficial way to alter a young person’s life trajectory. Locally, youth mentored in BBBSKY programs report better grades in school, improved mental health, and stronger family connectedness.

“Thank Your Mentor” Campaign

Most adults can recall having a mentor early on in their life—someone they were able to lean on for guidance, ask for advice, or simply talk to and confide in. For the “Thank Your Mentor” campaign, BBBSKY is encouraging community members to share testimonials on how mentoring shaped their life on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Users can tag @bbbskentuckiana and use the hashtag #ThankYourMentor for the agency to share their story as well.

BBBSKY also created a Thank Your Mentor letter template, which community members can print and send to their mentors who made an impact in their life. Social media sharing is encouraged!

Rollerskate For Kids’ Sake

BBBSKY is inviting the community to lace up their skates in support of youth mentoring programs. Community members can come to Champs Rollerdrome Saturday, Jan. 18, from 1 to 3 p.m., for a fun-filled afternoon featuring food, door prizes, giveaways, and information on how to volunteer with the BEST mentoring organization in Kentuckiana.

Attendees will be able to meet current volunteers (Bigs), mentees (Littles), and their families, make donations to receive limited-edition shirts, and so much more.

Today, one in three kids in America are growing up without a sustained, positive adult mentor in their lives. The need for youth mentorship is critical in Kentuckiana, with more than 600 young people on BBBSKY’s waitlist for a mentor. These National Mentoring Month initiatives aim to elevate the importance of mentorship and spark interest in volunteering as a mentor with BBBSKY.
