Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana launches Group Mentoring at Hudson Middle School

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Big Brothers Big Sisters Kentuckiana (BBBSKY) and Hudson Middle School, the first public middle school to open in West Louisville since 1932, have joined together to launch a new mentoring program.

The group mentoring program is facilitated by Black Male EDquity Network (BMEN) with the help of BBBSKY Mentors. These mentors help support male and female scholars in identifying their strengths, take pride in their self-identity, and help ignite their potential through meaningful mentoring relationships.

BBBSKY’s group mentoring program is centered around 6th grade male and female students who meet with Mentors in one hour after-school sessions for a total of two hours, two times per month, during the school year at Hudson Middle School.

“Seeing the excitement on the faces of the students at Hudson during the first couple of days was truly a special moment for our agency and all those involved because the impact of this mentoring program will last a lifetime. Launching group mentoring and partnering with BMEN, fits into our agency’s vision and plan of taking important evidence-based programming such as this into many more middle schools throughout the ten counties we serve,” said Gary Friedman, CEO of BBBSKY.

Since the launch of the program on Jan. 23, 2024, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana and Hudson Middle School have seen a total of 28 students enroll in the program that run through the end of the school year.

“As we continue to identify different ways to engage our young people and volunteers in our communities through the power of mentorship, we’re all incredibly excited to see the short- and long-term impact of this program,” said Group Mentoring Coordinator Amber Yocum.
